“Stellar Performance Award”

Children and Youth

To the Unit that demonstrates the best Children & Youth program that provides education to our youth on the issues of drug abuse, child abuse and/or teenage suicide. The program can highlight all of these issues or just one issue from the three shown above.

Entries should be submitted in typewritten form no to exceed 1,000 words.  Cover sheet must include Unit name, Unit number, Unit Children & Youth Chairman’s name and phone number.  Pictures, newspaper clippings, etc. can be included.

Department Awards 

Rules for Department entries:

bulletEntry must be typed, double spaced, not to exceed 1000 words, unless otherwise noted under award instructions.
bulletEntry must be in narrative form and placed in a folder.  Pictures, newspaper clippings and other materials may be included.
bulletAll entries must include a cover sheet with the name of the award entered, name of the Unit/County, name and address of the Unit/County Children & Youth Chairman, name and address of the County President and the number of members in the County.  The number of words should be noted in the lower right hand corner of the cover sheet.
 

Priscilla Imburgia Award
To the Unit, Children & Youth Chairman who gives the largest donation to the Child Welfare Foundation.

Violet Argila Plaque plus $100 cash award
To the Unit reporting the best year round program for children with special needs. (Children with learning disabilities, behavioral problems, speech, hearing and visually impaired mental retardation or physical disabilities).

Kay Mazzie Award
To the Unit reporting the best year round Children & Youth program with emphasis on activities as set forth annually by the American Legion.  Awarded to the Unit in two membership categories:

  1. Category I    10-100 Members

  2. Category II   101 Members and above.

Shirley Olinger Award
To the Unit, submitting the most outstanding report on “Under Our Wings”, program.
“Under our Wings’, we need to reach out to the families around us who need a little help throughout the year.  Many Units adopt a family or families and provide them with things on all special occasions and in between, if the need arises.

Department County Award
To the County reporting the best year round Children & Youth program with emphasis on activities as set forth annually by the American Legion.

Evelyn Sheldon Award
“Youth Reaches Out” - Awarded to a youth group or an individual youth in recognition of service to their community or fellow man.  The recipient does not have to be affiliated with the American Legion or the American Legion Auxiliary.  The important thing is that they are making life better for someone in their community.

Rules for “Youth Reaches Out”, award.

Entry must be typed; double spaced on 81/2 X 11 paper and shall not exceed 500 words.
Entry must be in narrative for, enclosed in a folder telling about “Out Reach”, activities of a group or individual.
Entry must contain a flyleaf with a Unit name and Number and the name, address and phone number of both the Unit President and the Unit Children & Youth Chairman.

Note:  The “Youth Reaches Out”, award will be presented to the nominating Unit at the Department Convention. The Unit will accept the responsibility for presenting the award to the recipient at an appropriate time and place. The nominating Unit will receive a certificate of appreciation.

All entries for Department and National Awards with the exception of the “Stellar Performance Award” must be received by the Department Children & Youth Chairman no later than May 10, 2009

"Outstanding" Promotion of Supporting Activities – Unit Award
An award presented to the unit Children & Youth Chairman in each division who promotes the Most Outstanding Program promoting any or all of the identified ALA activities. Entry must be in narrative form not to exceed 1,000 words.

Youth Hero Award – Local/Unit and National Level
An award for a youth, under 18 years of age, who performs a heroic act of physical valor. Nominations are to be completed at unit level and mailed to the Department Secretary, who certifies and mails the application to National Headquarters,. (No application should be mailed directly to National Headquarters.) National President will sign the Award Certificate and it will be returned to the unit to be presented on behalf of the unit and the national organization. Department C&Y Chairmen should be notified of the award.  Click here for Application.

Good Deed Award – Local/Unit and National Level
An award for a youth, under 18 years of age, who do not meet the Youth Hero Award criteria, but who are great examples of community service. This award is submitted on the same nomination form as the Youth Hero Award.

Legacy Award:
A plaque presented at National Convention to the top department based on combined total contributions of the American Legion Family and Eight & Forty contributions to The American Legion Child Welfare Foundation during contribution year (June 1, 2008 through May 31, 2009).

Garland M. Murphy, Jr. Award:
A plaque presented to one department from each organization of Legion family with the greatest contributions to The American Legion Child Welfare Foundation during contribution year (June 1, 2008 through May 31, 2009).

Plaques awarded at their National Convention.

Excellence Award:
A plaque presented to one of ten Departments from each organization of Legion family with the highest per capita contribution average for the contribution year (June 1, 2008 through May 31, 2009). Citations mailed to the runners-up.

"Heritage Circle" Gift Club:
A plaque presented to Departments of The American Legion Family and Eight & Forty for their cumulative donations during the contribution year June 1, 2008 through May 31, 2009. Plaques will be mailed September 1, 2009.

Meritorious Achievement Award:
